Homestead House Series: Spice

Now that spring has made an appearance, I am really excited about playing with more bold colors. If you are a long time follower, you are no stranger to my use of color. But I’m almost always limited to the medium of paint for bold colors. Lets face it…most milk paint colors are soft and elegant, not bright and bold. Not this time…I actually found a really bright spicy red milk paint color that still gives me the authentically rustic look of milk paint with the modern touch of color. This shade by Homestead House Paint Company, is called “Spice.”

Of course with some colors, I am always a bit hesitant, especially in the orange and red zone. Not everyone is a big fan of these colors and usually pieces in these colors are either grand statement pieces or small accent colors paired with a neutral to balance. So I wanted to test this color on a small piece that can still make a big statement.

I think it was also very lucky that I found this vintage tulip print. It matches the spice red perfectly and was the perfect way to tie in to the color. I also like how this color is paired with a sage green in the print. Perhaps maybe I’ll paint the chair in that color!

The Prep:

Honestly, I was shocked at how bright this color was. But I LOVED it! It took this dark, beat up finish to a whole other level! Now this tiny table is an eye catcher for sure! Just look at how rustic and authentic that finish turned out too!

After distressing, I sealed this table with my favorite polyurethane. I didn’t want it to continue chipping so I sprayed two coats of General Finishes High Performance Top Coat in Satin.

I really love how this small table turned out. Who said you can’t have a fancy color in a milk paint version? I guess now is a good time to start mixing colors, or you can check out the Homestead House Milk Paint variety in my Amazon store to see some of my other favorite colors!
